Sixteen carriers. Three practices. A panel chosen, not granted.
The firm represents sixteen carriers across its private-client, commercial, and benefits practices. The panel has been curated across ninety-three years — appointments earned through years of clean books in carrier appetite, declined when the carrier no longer wrote the kind of business the firm placed, and added when a new market opened the carrier panel needed.
Carrier appointments are not granted to every agency that asks. Chubb's Cornerstone designation is held by approximately sixty agencies nationally. PURE's Cornerstone Partner roster is similarly limited. Vault, Berkley One, and AIG Private Client Group all underwrite their agency appointments carefully — the carriers stake their underwriting performance on the agencies that bring them business, and the agencies stake their service delivery on the carriers that pay claims.
Three appointments have been declined in the past decade because the fit was wrong. Two have been turned in because the appetite drifted away from our clients. The panel below is what is active in 2026.
Chubb
A++ · Appointed 1991
Cornerstone Agency designation since 1991 — the firm's most-used private-client market. Chubb Masterpiece (homeowners), Chubb Yacht, Chubb Auto, Chubb Personal Excess, and the Chubb Commercial book all live in active rotation. Particularly strong for households with multiple properties, scheduled fine-art, and high personal-excess limits; equally strong for closely-held middle-market D&O.
AIG Private Client Group
A · Appointed 1998
The legacy HNW market. Strong appetite for international and multi-jurisdictional households, the Concierge form for aggregated household risk profiles, and the AIG Yacht and Aviation specialty placements that Helena Burroughs runs from Newport.
PURE Insurance
A · Appointed 2008
Member-owned reciprocal with a meaningful dividend back to members in low-loss years. PURE's Cornerstone Partner appointment is held by a small panel of agencies nationally. Strong appetite for $5M+ insured-property households; competitive on collector vehicles and personal-excess to $50M.
Vault Insurance
A · Appointed 2015
The ultra-high-net-worth specialist. Appetite begins around $5M in insured value and extends well beyond. Custom underwriting on architecturally-significant properties; the firm's most-used market for households whose primary residence is a registered historic property.
Berkley One
A+ · Appointed 2018
Newer in the HNW space but with deep family-owned-carrier discipline. Particularly strong for households with marine, equestrian, and aviation exposures alongside the property program. The Berkley One marine appetite has been a meaningful addition to the Newport office's specialty book.
Liberty Mutual Private Client
A · Appointed 2006
Used as a secondary private-client placement for households where Chubb, PURE, or Vault are not the right fit — typically because of geography, claim-history characteristics, or appetite changes during a renewal cycle. The Liberty Mutual Private Client form has improved meaningfully since 2018.
Cincinnati Insurance
A+ · Appointed 1976
Diamond Agency designation — the firm's most-used commercial middle-market carrier. Particularly strong for contractor, real-estate, and manufacturing clients in the $25M-$100M revenue range. The Cincinnati Private Client crossover serves households with insured-property values in the $2M-$5M range.
Cincinnati Specialty
A+ · Appointed 1989
Excess and surplus lines for commercial specialty risks the standard market declines. Strong appetite for non-admitted property, manufacturing-specialty, and the harder-to-place coastal-commercial exposures.
Travelers
A++ · Appointed 1942
The firm's longest active carrier appointment — Edmund Ashford signed the Travelers contract eighty-three years ago, and the relationship has run continuously since. Middle-market P&C, commercial auto, surety, and the workers-compensation Telematics partnership for clients with mature loss-history.
The Hartford
A+ · Appointed 1958
Middle-market commercial P&C with strong appetite for service-business and professional-firm risks; coordinates well with The Hartford's small-group benefits programs and group life and disability books.
Marsh Specialty
Placement · Est. 2011
Placement partnership rather than direct appointment — used for complex specialty placements that exceed standard-carrier appetite. Surplus lines, large excess towers, program business, and the placements that benefit from Marsh's London-and-Bermuda relationships.
Allianz
A+ · Appointed 2003
Private Client crossover, yacht and aviation specialty placements, and the larger international placements that benefit from Allianz's European underwriting capacity.
Westfield Specialty
A · Appointed 2014
Construction (general contractors, trade contractors, $5M+ revenue) and commercial real-estate. Strong appetite for the Connecticut and Rhode Island contractor markets the firm has historically served.
CNA
A · Appointed 1972
Professional liability, financial-services E&O, and the larger D&O placements. Particularly strong for technology and financial-services clients; the firm's most-used market for RIA and family-office investment-advisor E&O.
Tokio Marine HCC
A++ · Appointed 2010
Specialty management liability, kidnap and ransom, and technology errors and omissions. Tokio Marine HCC's K&R product is the firm's most-used market for international-travel households and high-profile principals.
RLI
A+ · Appointed 2001
Personal-excess liability ($1M-$10M umbrellas), surety, and the standalone-excess placements for households whose property program lives elsewhere. RLI's personal-excess is the firm's most-used market for households whose home-and-auto programs are written by Cincinnati Private Client or Liberty Mutual Private Client.
